Salt Lake City, Utah — Breaking News: A few minutes ago, a massive fire broke out at the Delta Center—home of the Utah Jazz—in downtown Salt Lake City, leaving the city in shock.
Authorities confirmed that the blaze erupted in the early afternoon, quickly spreading through several levels of the arena despite rapid response from the Salt Lake City Fire Department. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from miles away.
Preliminary reports indicate at least 7 people have tragically lost their lives in the incident, with dozens more injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment of burns, smoke inhalation, and other trauma. Emergency crews continue to search the facility for survivors.
Salt Lake City Fire Chief Mark Jensen called it “one of the worst structural fires the city has faced in decades,” and described the destruction inside the arena as “near total.” Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but an electrical fault or equipment malfunction is suspected.
Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith released a brief statement saying:
> “We are absolutely devastated by the tragic events at the Delta Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate.”
The NBA released its own statement expressing condolences and pledging support to the community and the team.
Local authorities have asked people to avoid the downtown area around 300 West and South Temple to allow emergency responders clear access. A hotline has been set up for families seeking information about missing loved ones.
