After failing to win the Premier League for the first time this decade last season, Pep Guardiola’s side have had to undergo something of a rebuild this summer, and the cash has been splashed.
Rayan Cherki looks like a very exciting signing, while Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and James Trafford are also all solid additions.
City have done plenty of exciting business so far this summer, but the club could be about to complete their best business of the summer, and it’s not even a new signing.
Rodri set for new Manchester City contract
According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Dazn, Manchester City are set to offer Rodri a new contract soon.
Rodri has been out injured for 12 months at this point, but with Real Madrid sniffing around, securing the midfielder is a crucial piece of business.
“Our final bombshell is about Rodri, the Ballon d’Or winner, the Manchester City legend, the Spanish legend. And it’s important to mention that Manchester City are working on several contracts,” Romano said.
“They are going to extend the contract of Ruben Dias agreed today. Nico O’Reilly agreed last week. The next one they want to wrap up is the contract of Rodri. So Manchester City are prepared to send a new contract proposal to the player valid until 2029. Remember that current deal is valid until 2027.
“So Manchester City are going to push in the next weeks and months to reach an agreement with Rodri over new deal.
“Then it’s going to be up to the player whether he wants to sign that new deal and so commit his future to Manchester City or maybe consider what he wants to do for the future. We always have these Real Madrid links. Obviously they love Rodri, but who doesn’t in football? It’s absolutely obvious and so this depends on Rodri.”
Rodri new contract could be Manchester City’s best business of the summer
Amid all of City’s new signings, getting Rodri tied down to a new contract could well be the best piece of business Manchester City do this summer.
Indeed, simply put, there may not be a more important player at Manchester City than Rodri.
Just look at City’s record with and without Rodri in recent years, the difference is telling.
New signings are always going to be more exciting, but there simply isn’t anything more important as a top-level football club than securing the future of arguably the best player in world football.
If City are to be successful in the coming years, Rodri will have a huge bearing on that success, and getting this new contract signed is a hugely important piece of business.
Make no mistake about it, Rodri is the heartbeat of this City team, and the longer he stays at the Etihad, the more trophies this side will win.
