Bayern Munich academy star Paul Wanner’s future has been the subject of recent speculation as he is set to begin the preseason with the Bavarians — while being linked with a loan or permanent transfer away.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been promising enough to be courted by both the German and Austrian senior men’s national teams, has not broken into the first team at Bayern yet. After spending last season on loan at FC Heidenheim and the previous one at SV Elversberg, Wanner could opt for more playing time again — and his patience with his opportunities at Säbener Straße could also be wearing thin.

But the Bavarians seem like they want to give him a solid look before shipping him away, and keeping him around in preseason is one way to do that. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also offered this comment (as captured by Ransport journalist Martin Volkmar, via @iMiaSanMia): “I don’t want to talk about what [sporting executives] Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are planning, but after our regular meetings, Paul is on the list for the new season.”

A lot can change in a short time — particularly with Bayern’s transfer window business not yet concluded — but Wanner should have the opportunity to impress in August. Jamal Musiala is out with a long-term injury, so this is really his moment to seize.
