This summer has seen the club recruit more depth and quality to the side. Leeds have bolstered the defence, adding Jaka Bijol and Sebastian Bornauw. Gabriel Gudmundsson has also replaced Junior Firpo.
And the midfield has two new additions in Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff. Lukas Nmecha has been the only signing added to the attack, but some additions are expected soon.
Leeds not done with signings yet
There are plans to add a new winger and striker to the team.
Lucas Perri’s deal is being finalized after he completed his medical. It could be more players through the door after news this week. Patrick Bamford is out of next season’s plans, and Mateo Joseph could also leave later in this window. Maybe the club could seek to replace them too, but for now, nothing has been confirmed.
Manchester City could terminate Kalvin Phillips’ contract
Leeds have held a long-standing interest in Kalvin Phillips. Since he fell out of favour at Manchester City, he has regularly been on the Whites’ radar. However, remaining in the Premier League seemed to be a priority for him as he chose two successive loan deals with West Ham and Ipswich Town in the last two seasons.
Phillips has been brought up again this summer as Manchester City seek to offload the winger. Leeds are interested, but will only move if the opportunity is available. Graeme Bailey thinks that could come sooner than later, with rumours that the midfielder’s contract could be terminated.
“I’m increasing in belief that Leeds are waiting for Phillips, as well. I’m even hearing Man City might pay him off,” Bailey said to Leeds United News.
“It might cost City a lot [three years left on his contract], but I think he will end up at Elland Road.”
Do Leeds United need another midfielder?
The club have already added Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff to an already stacked midfield unit.
Adding Kalvin Phillips will only complicate things more; with six midfielders fighting for just three spots in the team. Aside that, the value Phillips brings on the ball can be matched but the current players in the team. The City star really does not have a unique profile that would demand a starting place at the club. Leeds should really consider this before pursuing a possible move for the 29-year old.
